Trek the Inca Trail 2008 · 16 November 2007

The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for autistic people. With your help, we can make it happen.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

Many friends will be aware that my 5-year old grandson Andrew has recently been diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. In the simplest of terms, autism is a life long, developmental disability, affecting children and adults in the way they communicate and relate to those around them. People with autism find everyday social interaction extremely difficult, their ability to develop friendships is often limited and they find it hard to interpret emotional expression. The degree of disability can vary greatly but everyone with the condition shares a difficulty in making sense of the world.

At its highest point the Inca trail is 4200 metres, which is 3 times the height of Ben Nevis. Despite the possibility of acute mountain sickness, due to reduced oxygen levels, I am looking forward to the challenge and welcome your support to raise much needed funds for the National Autistic Society.

As I have decided to pay all of my own costs to take part in this event I guarantee that every penny donated will go directly to the National Autistic Society.

Many thanks.

'Stop Press'

I am very pleased to be able to tell all of my readers that at 6.45am Peru time, 12.45pm UK time, on Saturday 24 May, along with a really good group of mates, I successfully made it to Intipunku, the Sun Gate, to watch the sun rise over Machupicchu - no words or any number of photographs will ever do it justice so I will keep it short and simply say, "Wow!"
